Our Story: Discover the true story behind Karoo Saffron

Karoo Saffron began five years ago when two lifelong friends turned a challenge into an opportunity. Joe, a farmer grappling with a devastating drought in the Karoo, shared his struggles with Ross, an entrepreneurial visionary. After extensive research, Ross discovered that the Karoo’s unique climate was perfect for cultivating one of the world’s most prized spices: saffron, also known as “Red Gold" or the "Sunshine Spice" as we like to call it.

With determination and teamwork, Karoo Saffron was born. Today, our saffron is 100% organically grown in the Karoo, taking advantage of its ideal environment.

We’ve expanded beyond saffron threads to bring you innovative products, including a delicious cooking sauce and a dietary supplement range enriched with Saffron’s health benefits and packed in a SAPRHA accredited facility. More products are on the horizon, allowing everyone to experience the extraordinary qualities of this rare spice.

What is Saffron?

Saffron is derived from the Crocus sativus flower, revered for its brilliant crimson threads. These threads are prized for their exceptional flavor, aroma, health benefits and vibrant golden hue. The spice’s value lies in its key compounds—picrocrocin, safranal, and crocin—which give saffron its distinctive qualities.
